It's probably well known that too much sodium leads to high blood pressure, but what you don't know is that sodium and potassium work together to control high blood pressure. To control blood pressure, the kidneys filter blood and draw out excess fluid, which is directed to the bladder in the form of urine. Your kidneys regulate the amount of fluid stored in your body by regulating the amount of fluid stored.
Excess fluid from the bloodstream is drawn to the bladder by a balance between sodium and potassium. If this balance is out of balance, more fluid is retained and blood pressure rises. A large number of people are at risk for hypertension because less than 2 percent of U.S. adults reach the recommended daily intake of potassium.
